A13 Dealing with scientific literature: efficient reading and good note taking habits - 20H

Target audience:

PhD Students in first and second year.
You will work on your own research project. Please bring scientific literature you want to read.

Objectives:

Efficiently organising a research project – Time management – Improving reading speed and efficiency – Quickly identifying and understanding relevant information in a scientific text – Memorising and summarising key information – Increasing the scientific vocabulary

Contents:

Start off on the right foot: how to choose the literature
Prepare your research project
Define what you need according to what you already know
Define concrete goals
Design a strategic research program

How to focus on the essentials
Overcome barriers of effective reading
Look for the main ideas first, then the details
Find information fast
Combine reading and writing for better comprehension

How to take notes on research literature
Summarize a text into your own words
Vizualize information to vastly improve your comprehension
Recall information to dramatically increase retention
Structure your notes for future writing projects

How to become an active reader
Break out of the passive reading habit
Read multiple texts on a single subject all at the same time
Relate new information to prior knowledge
Read scientific literature critically
