[AWARD] 2023-2024 Rankings by Subject: the Université de Lyon institutions ranked in the THE and the ARWU

Once again this year, the Université de Lyon’s member and associate institutions have made their mark in the Shanghai 2023 (published on October 27, 2023) and Times Higher Education 2024 (published on October 26, 2023) rankings by subject.

The ranking of academic subjects, published by university ranking organizations, provide an overview of the strengths of each institution and highlight certain structures outside the US and the UK, which tend to be over-represented in traditional rankings.
 

The ARWU’s Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023: Six UdL institutions listed

Since 2009, the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy ARWU (Academic Rankings of World Universities), also known as the “Shanghai Rankings”, has been publishing disciplinary or subject-based rankings in addition to its general ranking of the world’s universities every August. The rankings are based on five indicators that evaluate each institution in 54 different disciplines.

  • Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 ranked in 21 subjects, including three in the world’s top 100;
  • INSA Lyonranked in six subjects, including two in the world’s top 100;
  • École Centrale de Lyonranked in two subjects, including one in the world’s top 100;
  • ENS de Lyonranked in seven subjects, including one in the world’s top 100;
  • emlyon Business Schoolranked in three subjects, including one in the world’s top 100;
  • Université Jean Monnetranked in two subjects.

The Times Higher Education 2024 ranking by subject: Eight UdL institutions listed

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject assess universities according to five performance indicators: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook. Each of these performance indicators is weighted differently for each of the eleven subjects.

  • ENS de Lyonranked in six subjects;
  • ENTPE ranked in three subjects;
  • INSA Lyonranked in one subject;
  • Mines Saint-Étienneranked in two subjects;
  • Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3ranked in two subjects;
  • Université Lumière Lyon 2ranked in five subjects;
  • Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1ranked in six subjects;
  • École Centrale de Lyonranked in one subject.
