Covid-19: watch out for false information!

On The March 18, 2020

In the midst of this unprecedented outbreak, it is important to prevent the spread of false information and seek information from verified sources. Academic research, especially that which is conducted at the Lyon and Saint-Étienne sites, can provide answers to your questions.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause a wide range of illnesses, from the common cold (some seasonal viruses are Coronaviruses) to more severe illnesses such as MERS-COV or SARS. The new coronavirus was identified in China in January 2020. The illness resulting from this new strain of coronavirus has been named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Coronavirus research in Lyon

The CIRI (Centre International de Recherche en Infectiologie de Lyon) Virpath laboratory, directed by Bruno Lina, PUPH UCBLI/HCL, and Manuel Rosa Calatrava, DR Inserm, is a WHO-associated laboratory where the NRC for respiratory viruses (including influenza) is located. As such, the hospital side of the laboratory is involved in the diagnosis while the research side has been able to access clinical samples at a very early stage and has, therefore, been able to isolate and amplify strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

VirPath has already identified several pre-clinical infection patterns, with the aim of testing a number of molecules in their portfolio. Their innovative approach is based on repositioning drugs that are already available on the market, in order to develop new anti-viral treatments, and has the major advantage of drastically reducing the development time and costs associated with this generation of anti-virals. The laboratory has successfully validated its influenza strategy by implementing a phase 2b clinical trial.
