The Université de Lyon, committed to the energy and ecological transition

The Université de Lyon and its member institutions, in partnership with CROUS Lyon and with the support of the Caisse des Dépôts, have made a collective commitment to the successful energy and ecological transition of the Lyon Saint-Étienne university site, and are rallying together to reduce the site's environmental impact

The site comprises around 500 buildings over 1.4 million square meters and accommodates nearly 150,000 people, including students, teachers, research lecturers and staff.

The university's transition, in light of its heating and electricity requirements, the travel it brings about and the waste it creates, is an important part of the region's fight against climate change.

Through its real estate strategy, which has been particularly implemented as part of Lyon Cité Campus and the State-Region Planning Contract (CPER) which has made an unparalleled investment in the energy and ecological transition, the Université de Lyon has already proved itself to be a key actor in the region's energy transition.

Regional climate and energy plans

By signing the Saint-Étienne Métropole Regional Climate and Energy Plan on October 13, 2015 and that of the Métropole de Lyon on November 12, 2015, the Université de Lyon reaffirmed its commitment to the Energy and Ecological Transition alongside local authorities and companies in the region.
Since then, the university has made a commitment to the water authority by signing the metropolitan contract for the sustainable management of water and, most recently, the Sustainable Building Plan

The charter for the energy and ecological transition

On November 2, 2015, the Université de Lyon and its 12 member institutions signed a charter to make a commitment to taking collective action for the energy and ecological transition to meet their three main responsibilities:

  • Science, through their contribution to technological and social innovation in all fields affected by climatic and environmental challenges
  • Society, by providing study programs, disseminating knowledge and taking action to change behavior
  • Patrimony, through investments and management measures to implement the transition on their sites effectively
The founding charter for this initiative lays the groundwork for the project.

A collaborative and operational initiative — a 3-year work program

This collaborative initiative has been broken down into 3 phrases over 3 years before it can be implemented.

  • 2015-2016 > Site assessment
The first stage of this project consisted of a site assessment that aimed to identify any challenges involved in this transition. The scope for improving the campus's ecological management was identified. Raising user awareness about how they can be more economical and environmentally friendly has also been an important tool.
  • 2016-2017 > The site's strategy
To meet the challenges, the Université de Lyon created an ambitious yet realistic strategy for the site as part of a co-construction approach with all the institutions and in partnership with CROUS Lyon, the finalized version of which will soon be presented.
  • 2017-2018 > Action plans
The tools for concrete action will be mobilized by each stakeholder to help meet their common goals.
