The Université de Lyon has taken part in the 2019 Lyon Festival of Lights
From December 5, 2019 to December 8, 2019
Since 2017, the Université de Lyon has been working to develop a cultural policy for the whole site. The aim of this policy is to raise awareness of the educational and cultural programs that each institution has to offer, and to host ambitious events involving several Université de Lyon institutions as well as local cultural partners.
The Festival of Lights (Fête des Lumières), a Lyon tradition which dates back more than 15 years and takes place on December 8, has become a must-see event for Lyon residents and visitors alike.
By presenting a project at the Festival of Lights, the site affirms its great potential in terms of research and education, stimulating student creativity, as well as that of the entire university community by creating a new creative and productive space. The Université de Lyon’s project is intended to be the result of close collaborations between artists, students and the citizens of Lyon, working with researchers and professors, both for its design and development.
Leonardo’s Bright Daydreams
Artistic direction has been entrusted to Christine Richier, lighting designer and co-director of the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Techniques’ Light Design Master’s Degree at the Lyon Theater (Ensatt), Tom Huet, set designer and lighting expert, and Julie Lola Lanteri, lighting designer, visual artist and art school speaker.
Look at the light and admire its beauty. Close your eyes, and then look again: what you saw is no longer there; and what you will see later is not yet.
- Leonardo da Vinci
The idea is based on an immersive light path within a cabinet of curiosities, based on Leonardo da Vinci’s work on shadow and light. This theme was chosen because da Vinci’s work incorporates many disciplines (light, optics, vision, painting, mechanics, kinetics, etc.) which incorporate rich and inspiring elements. It is also a timely theme for 2019, which marks the 500th anniversary of da Vinci’s death.
Starting in October, over a hundred volunteers came to the Fondation Bullukian Garden to create and produce artwork as part of the design and production workshops from December 5 to 8, 2019.
