The Université de Lyon held an online Pop’Sciences Forum to mark World Ocean Day. “Should we leave the Oceans alone?” On June 8, three guest speakers appeared on the event’s “improvised set” to address this issue.

The ocean is an important part of life and makes up nearly three quarters of our planet. The ocean was given some respite for almost three months during the lockdown period (no more fishing, sailing, and so on).

So now we can see how resilient marine environments are, but also how harmful our consumer habits can be. It is hard to imagine our world after this event without rethinking our relationship with ocean life.

The forum, which is a trademark of Pop’Sciences, explored the subject through the lens of different scientific disciplines. It was a wonderful experience, both for science enthusiasts and for those who want to learn more about the world around us.

Three interactive mini-lectures on Ocean preservation

  • Henri Bourgeois Costa from the Fondation Tara Océan discussed plastic pollution and how to combat it;
  • Sylvain Pichat, Associate Professor in Geology and Paleoceanography, uncovered the secrets behind Ocean systems;
  • And Kiara Neri, Associate Professor of International and Maritime Law at the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, explained the importance of international maritime law when establishing protected marine areas.

These lectures already have nearly 3,000 views on social media!
