When doctoral students get closer to local socio-economic organizations: a look back at the 2021 Doctoriales

Thirty-five doctoral students from the Université de Lyon and the Université Clermont Auvergne, including three representatives from the universities of Vilnius, Graz and Granada as part of the Arqus project, took part in the fifth edition of the Doctoriales, held from September 27 to 29 in Clermont-Ferrand.

This hands-on training program is available to PhD students from all disciplines. PhD students will work together in multidisciplinary teams, offering strategic ideas, contributing to an innovative project or to solving a new or complex problem provided by a partner company.

This year, four companies took part: Aguettant, Teclis, Limagrain Europe and Yesitis laboratories, i.e. two companies in Lyon and two in Clermont-Ferrand.

After two days of innovative challenges designed to help doctoral students transition from a researcher’s perspective to a consultant’s perspective, which resulted in deliverables that can be implemented in the short or medium-term, the training ended with a series of brainstorming workshops on transversal skills led by the APEC.


Entrusting our subject to doctoral students opened up a whole range of possibilities and gave us a fresh perspective on our problems. In addition to moving from producing an idea to the prototyping phase, which is more realistic, bringing together a group of doctoral students from different disciplines to address our problem also helps us to rethink our habits. The aim of the Doctoriales is not only to bring doctoral students closer to local socio-economic organizations, but also to allow them to reflect on the technical/human skills they have acquired throughout their doctoral training. It was an intense yet incredible learning experience. In addition to spending three days in a great environment, I learned a lot about my ability to interact, to use my skills in a group of people with a wide range of personalities. It also helped me to identify areas where I could improve, such as my own personality and how I interacted with other team members as the project progressed.
