Creation of the “Joint Institute for Neuromuscular Research” (JIN) International Associated Laboratory in Canada

On The January 29, 2019

The agreement to build the “Joint Institute for Neuromuscular Research” (JIN) International Associated Laboratory (LIA) was signed on January 29, 2019, by the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, the University of Ottawa and the CNRS.

The JIN LIA aims to define a formal framework for the cooperative network that has been built over the past decade for neuromuscular diseases, and to pass on research results to society.

This LIA aims to help learn more about fundamental cell physiology and the molecular structure of skeletal muscles and the peripheral nervous system, both in normal and pathological states, from embryo development through old age.

This ambitious project is building upon an existing partnership of nearly twenty years between the researchers, Pr. Laurent Schaeffer, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 – Hospices Civils de Lyon, and Pr. Bernard Jasmin, Faculty of Medicine – University of Ottawa.

These two researchers have each developed biomedical research institutes focusing on the neuromuscular system in their respective countries:

  • The Institut NeuroMyoGène (INMG, UMR5310-U1217 with joint supervision from the CNRS, the Inserm and the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1) in Lyon, and
  • The Centre for Neuromuscular Disease (CMNM, led by the University of Ottawa), in Ottawa.

This partnership is a natural outgrowth of this long-standing joint research.

The agreement for the creation of the LIA was signed during the opening of the joint branch of the CNRS and the Université de Lyon in Canada, hosted by the University of Ottawa.
