QS Best Student Cities 2023 Ranking: Lyon is ranked 2nd in France

The City of Lyon is ranked 45th among the best student cities in the world, tied with Birmingham, and second in France in this year's ranking. It has moved up three ranks since QS 2021.

The “QS Best Student Cities” ranking includes 140 top student cities from all over the world. To qualify for this ranking, each city must have a population of at least 250,000 and at least two universities that are listed in the QS World University Rankings.

The cities are ranked according to six key indicators of equal importance. These are:

University rankings in the QS World University Rankings;
Student diversity and gender parity;
Desirability;
Employer activity;
Affordability (tuition and costs of living);
Student voice.

Lyon ranks 45th among the best student cities for 2023, three places higher than in the QS 2022 ranking.

This is an excellent acknowledgment of the quality of student life and studies, which had already been highlighted in the latest L’Étudiant ranking, which placed Lyon as “the second best student city in France”.

Three other French cities are also ranked in this list: Paris (in 8th position), Toulouse (78th) and Montpellier (119th).
