The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject assess universities according to five performance indicators:

  • Teaching (reputation survey, staff-to-student ratio, Doctorate-to-Bachelor’s ratio, Doctorates-awarded-to-academic-staff ratio and institutional income);
  • Research (reputation survey, research income and research productivity);
  • Citations (influence of the research produced, measured using bibliometric data provided by Elsevier);
  • International outlook (proportion of international students, proportion of international staff and international collaborations);
  • Industry income (a university’s ability to help industry through knowledge transfer).

Each of these performance indicators is weighted differently according to each subject (Arts & humanities, Engineering, Computer science, Social sciences, Business & economics, Education, Law, Life sciences, Physical sciences, Psychology and Clinical & health).
