The Université de Lyon participates in the first U7 International Alliance Summit

From July 9, 2019 to July 10, 2019

From July 9 to 10, the Université de Lyon participates in the U7 International Alliance Summit. Under the high patronage of the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, this two-day session will allow 49 university presidents, from 21 countries, to debate the universities' contribution to thinking global issues, and set a list of commitments before the next G7 (Biarritz, August 2019).

Initiated on June 5, 2019 at Sciences Po Paris, the U7 International Alliance brings together the presidents of 49 leading institutions from all over the world. Together they shall undertake to reflect and to devise practical measures, in order to ensure that their universities respond to the urgency posed by the major challenges of the multilateral agenda.

This is the very first international alliance of university presidents, seeking to structure and strengthen their global operations.

The aim of the U7 Alliance: to actively contribute to multilateral discussions

As part of this alliance, university presidents fully assume a civic and social responsibility to collectively adopt and launch operations that will have an impact on a regional, national and global scale. The founding members previously agreed to gather each year, in order to devise a common agenda and to create a plan of action for their universities within the global landscape.

The U7 International Alliance first Summit, held on July 9 & 10, 2019, will focus on 5 main themes defined during the inaugural summit:

  • The role of institutions of higher education in a global world;
  • The climate and energy transition;
  • Inequalities and the responsibility of higher education in the fight against the polarization of our societies;
  • The impact of technological innovation;
  • Civic involvement, from a local to a global scale.

The summit will come to an end on July 10, with the signing of a list of specific commitments, resulting from preliminary discussions of the working groups, which will be debated and voted on during the meetings. These commitments will thus be submitted to French President Emmanuel Macron, as to broaden and enrich the 2019 G7 meetings in Biarritz.
