The Université de Lyon gets involved in the EUA-CDE network

On The March 30, 2021

Thanks to support from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, the Université de Lyon has taken part in a number of online events organized by the EUA-CDE network (Council for Doctoral Education of the European University Association). This network includes 260 universities and aims to promote discussions and experience-sharing among European doctoral training professionals.

Over the past few months, the Université de Lyon has taken part in two major EUA-CDE events.

THE ONLINE 2020 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the EUA-CDE chose to replace its annual 2020 conference with a series of online workshops and webinars that took place between June 25 and 30.

The first webinar, “Disciplines and Interdisciplinarity in Doctoral Training” was an opportunity for participants to discuss the growing interest surrounding interdisciplinarity in doctoral programs, even though academic research and PhDs are still primarily based on studying a single subject. At the same time, the recent coronavirus outbreak has demonstrated the importance of research collaborations involving different fields, and how the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and other sciences need to work together to address complex challenges.

With this in mind, the EUA-CDE held three online workshops between June 26 and 30, which were designed to help network members exchange best practices and share their experiences, despite not being able to meet in-person. In particular, the workshops focused on the professional integration of doctoral students, improving procedures within doctoral schools, and the evolution of institutional governing bodies.

THE 2021 “DIGITIZING DOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAMS” WORKSHOP

Today, digitalization plays a major role in our society, as it has a direct impact on our lives. This also applies to research, data collection and analysis, interactions between international researchers and presenting research findings.

The annual EUA-CDE 2021 thematic workshop focused on where doctoral training fits into this context of constantly evolving new technologies, how doctoral schools are influenced by these issues, and how they can make the most effective use of these new digital tools. Participants had the opportunity to discuss the training and skills needed by doctoral students, as well as to share their thoughts and best practices.
