The European Alliance partner

The Université de Lyon's European strategy, which builds on the wide variety of educational exchanges taking place within the Erasmus+ program and numerous individual researcher collaborations (over 60% of UdL publications), is structured around strong bilateral cooperation with its cross-border partners (Western Switzerland and northern Italy) and large European funding programs (Erasmus+, Horizon 2020 and Interreg).
This strategy will be extensively expanded and solidified through IDEXLYON.

(Flagship) projects developed through the International Alliance:

"After the PhD" project

The Université de Lyon conducts ambitious projects to enhance the employability of its PhD students. The "After the PhD" project serves this purpose through its international and multicultural dimension. The project, which began in 2014, has established a cross-border partnership with institutions from 4 regions (Rhône-Alpes, Western Switzerland, Piedmont and Lombardy):
  • Switzerland: CUSO (University Conference of Western Switzerland)
  • Italy :
    • Polytechnic University of Turin
    • UUniversity of Turin
    • UUniversity of Milano-Bicocca
The first phase of the project (2014 and 2015) was aimed at pooling each partner's territorial data concerning the employability of its doctors.
The 'After your PhD' website (http://apresledoctorat.universite-lyon.fr) was created to provide an analysis of the data collected and to provide a picture of the employability of young PhD students across the four regions.
During the project's second phase (2016), the partners organized a Doctoral Workshop which aimed to improve the employability of PhD students and to improve mutual understanding with the business world.

Rhône Campus Alliance

In 2017, five universities from the Lake Geneva area and the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes teamed up to create the "Rhône Campus Alliance" to strengthen scientific synergies between the Université de Lyon, the University of Geneva, the Université Grenoble Alpes, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland and the University of Lausanne.
The "Rhône Campus Alliance" network is based on the sharing of resources and skills between the five institutions and using their geographical proximity to develop collaborations in four main areas: energy, sustainable development, neuroscience and health. It contributes to the strengthening of world-class innovation within the regions, which has significant local, European and international outreach.

ARQUS European University Alliance

In order to establish their international policy and European ambitions, the Université Jean Monnet, the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 and the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, under the banner of the Université de Lyon (UdL), have joined the “ARQUS” European Alliance.

By 2025, this project aims to strengthen European cooperative projects in a wide array of disciplines and cross-disciplines, with our partner European universities, including Granada (Spain), Graz (Austria), Leipzig (Germany), Padua (Italy), Vilnius (Lithuania) and Bergen (Norway). The scope of this project extends beyond that of the European Commission’s European University Alliance call for projects, to which its partners are applying. It aims to implement concrete steps beginning in 2019.

Important information: ARQUS activities continue remotely

The world health crisis caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and the emergency measures in place in all of our countries mean that all of our Arqus universities have suspended in-class teaching activities and, in most cases, have temporarily ceased all other face-to-face activities, with our staff and students working and studying from home.

We are in the process of re-organizing our Arqus workflow and adapting the work plan to this exceptional situation, so we will be able to continue with our activities from our home offices.
