[IN OUR INSTITUTIONS] QS Rankings by Subject 2023: the Université de Lyon institutions make their mark

The QS World University Ranking by Subject 2023, compiled by the British company QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), was published on March 22. This 13th edition includes nine member and associate institutions of the Université de Lyon.

Each year, the “QS World University Rankings by Subject” ranks the world's higher education institutions according to several indicators: international reputation of the institutions, recognition by employers, number of publications and appearances in other university rankings, and so on. The rankings cover a total of 51 disciplines.

Some 1,600 institutions from 93 countries are included in the 2023 ranking, of which 73 are French institutions (as opposed to 75 in the 2022 ranking). The Université de Lyon has maintained its position in the ranking compared to 2022, with nine of its institutions listed:

  • Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1: listed in 17 disciplines (out of 51)
  • École normale supérieure (ENS) de Lyon: listed in 16 disciplines
  • Institut national des sciences appliquées (INSA) Lyon: listed in 9 disciplines
  • École Centrale de Lyon: listed in 5 disciplines
  • Université Lumière Lyon 2: listed in 4 disciplines
  • Emlyon Business School: listed in 3 disciplines
  • École des Mines de Saint-Étienne: listed in 2 disciplines
  • Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3: listed in 2 disciplines
  • Conservatoire national supérieur musique et danse (CNSMD) de Lyon: listed in 1 discipline


The Université de Lyon institutions represent 12.3% of all the French institutions listed, and 12.63% of all the French discipline listings in the QS by Subject 2023 rankings.
