The Université de Lyon institutions’ commitment to student mental health

On The January 15, 2021

The Université de Lyon has co-signed the press release issued by the universities and higher education institutions in Lyon and Saint-Étienne in response to a series of tragic events within the university community.

One of our students still in hospital, in a very worrying condition, after attempting suicide on Saturday. On behalf of our entire university community, we would like to offer our full support to their family, friends and classmates. Earlier this week, another student was rescued from an act of despair in one of our university residences, thanks to a group of neighboring students who stepped in. Sadly, these are not the only desperate acts being witnessed within the university community during these difficult times.
This situation has aroused a great deal of emotion and concern throughout our university community. It reminds us how vulnerable students are, and the current health situation has increased this vulnerability. A number of students have dropped out of university, many are experiencing psychological and financial difficulties, etc. With university closures, distance learning courses and an absence of sporting, cultural and social activities, students have become isolated and psychologically distressed.
Following several months of extremely restrictive health measures for the entire population, especially students, it is absolutely essential that we address the extreme vulnerability of young people caused by the crisis. Young people are our future, and our priority.
