They make the Université de Lyon: meet Kévin Meurdefroid

The UdL met with Kévin Meurdefroid, president of ATTOM, a company supported by the UdL, which recruits doctors and sets up laboratories on the LyonTech-la Doua campus.

Please tell us a little about your company, ATTOM.

ATTOM was created in 2016. It is a design office specialized in the medical field and is recognized as an R&D center due to its ability to deal with subjects with a low level of technological maturity. We work with large accounts and healthcare professionals, including design surgeons. We currently have ten employees, and are aiming to hire five more by September 2021.

In 2020, your offices were set up near the LyonTech-la Doua Campus. Is there a particular reason why you chose this location?

We have spent this last year focusing on our own research and development projects. This choice, as well as the lockdown, had an impact on our organization, especially in terms of our premises and our equipment needs. This is why we chose the LyonTech-la Doua campus. It was the perfect new location for us, for three reasons. First of all, the property is unique. After discussions with the UdL Campus Manager, we were given access to pre-equipped offices, including a chemistry laboratory. Also, the progressive rent provided by the EINSTEIN business incubator has been much appreciated. Secondly, we wanted to strengthen our ties with the academic players we already work with and to build new relationships with the surrounding research laboratories. Finally, this location will allow us to recruit quality candidates with different levels of education. What makes this campus even more interesting is that it combines training and research expertise that correspond to our needs.

So how did you come to work with the UdL?

We were initially supported by the UdL’s doctoral studies department in terms of relations with laboratories, setting up projects, and recruitment. It has helped us a lot in recruiting young doctors by advertising our offers in its laboratories and organizing events. For example, we hired a PhD student we met during the “Employment Meetings” organized by the UdL and its partners last November. And, we are planning on our first CIFRE thesis with several laboratories. It is due to start in September 2021.

In addition, as an R&D center, we deal with a wide range of issues that we simply cannot handle on our own. So we sometimes need to call on our external partners, including the UdL. The doctoral studies department also put us in touch with the Innovation Factory, which operates the MEANS portal. This tool has allowed us to benefit from a wide range of expertise and equipment. This means we can remain agile and respond quickly to the various demands of our customers. This support has allowed us to look further ahead and to establish new collaborations within a dynamic academic environment.
