They make the Université de Lyon: Safe B

On The June 2, 2021

The Université de Lyon met with Safe B, the team that won the Arqus 2021 Virtual Company Creation Challenge with their connected mouthguard that helps detect concussions in rugby.

So what is your idea, how did it come about, and who is behind Safe B?

We designed a mouthguard that measures the intensity and frequency of impacts during contact sports using a number of sensors. Our goal is to improve the early detection of concussions. This will help to make these sports safer and therefore more attractive to a wider audience. We are a team of students from all walks of life who want to make a real difference. And the Campus Creation competition was the ideal opportunity to do so. It was Corentin who came up with the idea. He plays rugby was already somewhat familiar with concussions through his studies.

Corentin:

When I came up with the idea, I said to myself: “How can I make rugby better?” and the first thing that came to mind was concussions. I presented my idea during the Campus Creation Webinars, which is how I met the rest of the team. We were all on the same wavelength from day one, and we all share the same values. The Safe B team was formed and the project was set in motion.

Can you tell us a bit about your “Campus Creation” experience?

This year’s Campus Creation theme was a good choice, since the competition can be a real emotional roller coaster. Anything can happen overnight, it's pretty exciting. But the Campus Creation competition is also a golden opportunity. An opportunity to discover the world of entrepreneurship, to dare to venture into the unknown and to work on a project that we really feel strongly about.

Why did you decide to take part in the “Arqus 2021 Virtual Company Creation Challenge Finals”?

After receiving positive feedback on the project, some of us had already thought about taking the project beyond the campus. So Arqus was the perfect opportunity to challenge ourselves and make our idea a reality. It was also an opportunity to get support for our project.

What have you gained from this experience?

This experience allowed us to benefit from the advice of the jury and coaches on how to create a successful pitch and how to develop our Safe B project. We were also able to experience filming in a professional setting. It also allowed us to get in touch with partner groups and to expand our network.

So what’s next for Safe B?

What’s next? We want to take our project even further. Not only is this something we care about, it’s an important issue. The project is complicated and the next few months will be crucial for the future of Safe B. Fortunately, we have many people to support us in making this project a reality.
