The Université de Lyon is an academic community (COMUE – Communauté d’universités et établissements) gathering 11 member and 24 associated institutions in Lyon and Saint-Étienne. It coordinates and conducts structuring projects on behalf of those institutions according to three main objectives: contributing to an attractive university center, responsible and at the service of its students, teachers, researchers and staff; proposing areas of training and research in line with changes in society; and enhancing the Lyon Saint-Étienne area in conjunction with all its stakeholders.

On September 29, 2022, The ENTPE, the École Centrale de Lyon, INSA Lyon and École des Mines de Saint-Étienne signed the 4EI student mobility agreement, which aims to develop a common engineering project on the Lyon Saint-Étienne site, and to offer more specialization options to seniors through inter-institution mobility. The signature took place in the presence of the Directors of the institutions at the Université de Lyon.

Since 2014, the Quais Berthelot university site buildings have been undergoing a major renovation program in order to preserve this historic site in Lyon. This phase of the Lyon Cité Campus project, led by the Université de Lyon and involving the Lumière Lyon 2, Jean Moulin Lyon 3 universities and Sciences Po Lyon, has officially come to an end.
