The "Open Libraries +" scheme: The Université de Lyon is committed to the success of its students

The "Open Libraries +" project led by the Université de Lyon was chosen on Friday 24 June by the French Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research. The project, which has been described as "ambitious" and "demonstrating the effective coordination of the site's institutions", aims to improve students' visits to libraries in Lyon Saint-Étienne by extending opening hours in the evening, at weekends and before end-of-term exams.
The quality of student life has been recognized as a factor for success and is one of the Université de Lyon's main priorities for all its campuses. The extended opening hours of the site's university libraries (BU) will, therefore, be an additional factor for the success of our students
", said Michèle Cottier, the Vice President of documentation policy and student life at the Université de Lyon.
Extending the libraries' opening hours is also a step forward for equal opportunities, particularly for students on selective courses",
she added. In fact, this type of teaching program is targeted by private institutions that offer students access to work spaces outside of university library opening times for a fee.

The scheme will also enable the site to expand the active teaching methods currently being developed in libraries, in specially adapted spaces that are open for students outside of teaching time (group workspaces, creative spaces with immediate access to collections, etc.).

The president, Khaled Bouabdallah, was delighted to hear that the "Open Libraries +" project had been chosen:
Library access is key for the attractiveness of the Lyon Saint-Étienne site, particularly for international students and researchers who are used to greater or even unlimited access. This project, which has a great collective dynamic, is a significant progress for the Lyon Saint-Étienne site which provides for a community of over 122,000 students and nearly 12,000 researchers and research lecturers.

The Université de Lyon will provide funding (€719,502 for just over 3 years) to carry out the project.

All students, researchers and research lecturers at the Université de Lyon will be able to access the libraries during these extended opening hours. The 10 libraries who have chosen to share these extended opening hours will provide access on a rotational basis on Sundays and over Christmas. All libraries (BU) can be easily accessed on public transport:
