Social and environmental responsibility

We the Université de Lyon and our 35 member and associate institutions are collectively committed to the success of the energy, ecological and societal transition of the Lyon Saint-Étienne university site, and are working to reduce our environmental impact.

The university campuses are home to approximately 180,000 students, professors, research professors and staff, in over 500 buildings covering roughly 1.5 million square meters. The university’s transition, in light of its heating and electricity requirements, the travel it brings about and the waste it creates, has an important role to play in the local fight against climate change.

We the Université de Lyon and our institutions are aware of the important role we play in the success of major transitions. We have collectively committed to reducing their impact through a charter signed in June 2023, backed by a strategic plan of specific actions to be implemented in the coming months.

The range of topics is very broad and reflects the issues addressed by our structure: training for the people and professionals of tomorrow, the impact of fundamental and experimental research, the links between science and society, responsibility and setting an example, etc.
