Master's in Applied Mathematics and Statistics: math in action course

The Math in Action program of the Applied Mathematics Master’s degree aims to train researchers to work closely with applications.

PROGRAM

First Year of the Master’s program

The first year of the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Master’s program provides students with diverse training in all fields of applied mathematics: numerical analysis, modeling, probability, statistics, and implementation on a computer (programming languages and specialized software). Students select their specialization in the second year of the program.
The first year strongly links fundamental classes and applied modules. In particular, it includes a long-term project, worth 6 credits, that involves using theoretical and practical knowledge to address a specific problem. This project may be led in collaboration with socio-economic partners (businesses) or academic partners (research laboratories).

Second Year of the Master’s program

The “Maths in Action: from concept to innovation” second-year Master’s program includes four different courses, each offering targeted applications:

  • “Mathematics applied to the environment and climate”
  • “Mathematics for simulation engineering”
  • “Vision / Images”
  • “Mathematics applied to the biology and medicine”

Each of these courses teaches several innovative areas of mathematics, including numerical modeling, partial differential equations, stochastic modeling and statistics. Very few programs in France offer this blend of courses, and the educational staff actively is working on building further interaction between fields.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

M1 – Applicants for the first year of the Master’s program must have a Mathematics degree from a French university or an equivalent undergraduate degree. Admission to this program is never automatically granted. Applicants are selected by a teaching commission jury. All applicants will be considered. For instance, an applicant who does not have an undergraduate degree in fundamental mathematics or applied mathematics and social sciences could be admitted if he or she is brilliant. The total number of applications and the general level of applicants will also have an impact on individual responses, because there are only 36 places to fill.

M2 – Applicants for the second year of the Master’s program must have completed a Mathematics M1 program with similar content to the M1 offered at the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1. As for the M1, regardless of your previous diploma, a jury will review your application. This program may also be taken, in full or in part, as part of a continuing training program. This Master’s degree may also be granted as the validation of prior professional experience (VAE).
