International Alliance: China

The Université de Lyon has established six framework cooperation agreements, mainly in Shanghai, with the Tongji University, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the Fudan University, the East China Normal University (ECNU), the New York University Shanghai (NYU-Shanghai) and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS).

It is also one of the only COMUEs to have an agreement with the China Scholarship Council (CSC).

The aim of the collaborations is to promote student and scientist mobility, joint research activities, co-diploma training, themed schools, workshops, conferences, etc. They are primarily being developed in the fields of Exact Sciences, health, entrepreneurship, engineering, sustainable development, arts and Social Sciences.

Training programs

Undergraduate and graduate mobility programs (CLARA: oncology students, ISLYE: young entrepreneurs, and TEEF: engineers of excellence)

CLARA, oncology students: the Université de Lyon, with the support of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, coordinates at regional level an annual scholarship program aimed at supporting the incoming mobility of medical students from Jiao Tong University in Shanghai. These students integrate Master's courses in oncology at the universities of Lyon, Saint-Étienne, Grenoble and Clermont-Ferrand. For the 2022/2023 academic year, four Chinese students are benefiting from this program.

ISLYE, young entrepreneurs: the International Soft Landing for Young Entrepreneurs (ISLYE) program gives young entrepreneurs from the Lyon Saint-Étienne Entrepreneurship Center the opportunity to develop their project internationally through a reciprocal mobility program between partner incubators. In 2019, the first ISLYE class of six entrepreneurs and six mentors went to Tongji University to work on adapting their project to the Chinese market.

TEEF, Engineers of Excellence in France program: each year, around twenty of the best students from the Tongji University spend a week at the Université de Lyon. The aim is to highlight the training and research opportunities on offer at the Lyon Saint-Étienne university site in order to encourage students to study there.

Doctoral mobility grants from the China Scholarship Council (CSC)

The Université de Lyon has an agreement with the China Scholarship Council (CSC), which has been active since 2013, to provide grants enabling Chinese students to complete their PhDs in the Université de Lyon institutions. Approximately 30 scholarships are awarded each year, for periods of up to 48 months.

Health collaborations with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Medicine and Humanities: The annual summer school, which is held one year in China, another in France and another in Canada, focuses on humanities education in medicine. This collaboration also includes setting up online training modules on this subject.

Partners: the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the University of Ottawa, the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Université de Lyon

The Filière de formation médicale francophone (FFMF), French-speaking medical school: the Lyon site coordinates this nationwide French-Chinese network, mainly through the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1’s medical schools. The Université de Lyon is very much involved in this program and supports its development through short and long term teaching assignments for doctors from the Lyon-Saint-Étienne site, organizing scientific conferences, providing internship opportunities and several other activities. The alumni are considered leading experts in China, with more than 400 French-speaking Chinese physicians holding high-level positions in Chinese university hospitals.

Research

Support for research networks: The EcoChem Green Chemistry Network

EcoChem: a network of French and Chinese researchers working in catalysis and synthesis, who launched the internationally renowned FC2GChem “French-Chinese Conference on Green Chemistry” biennial conference. It brings together the academic and industrial communities, with the East China Normal University (ECNU) as the main Chinese academic partner.

Scientific mobility support programs: research chairs and the UdL – ECNU Simian Institute residency program

Research Chairs: the aim of the program is to support short-term reciprocal scientific mobility between the UdL member institutions and its Chinese partners. The added value lies in the increased potential for cooperation with China. They promote the development of research projects, lecture series, teaching assignments, etc.

The UdL–Simian Institute residency program: a program that encourages medium-term academic exchanges between the UdL research institutions and the East China Normal University (ECNU) Simian Institute. The residency program focuses Social Sciences, namely history, literature, philosophy, and classical studies, which are the four pillars of the Simian Institute.

Support program for UdL-Shanghai scientific and cultural events

Supporting French-Chinese scientific and cultural events is part of a pivotal cooperation strategy. The wide range of themes and event formats that have been selected for funding attests to the richness of existing collaborations between the Université de Lyon and its Chinese partners in Shanghai.

Support for structuring projects

Urban planning collaboration: the “Intelligence of Urban Worlds” (IMU) laboratory of excellence has signed a collaboration agreement with the Intelligent Urbanization Co-creation Center for High Density Region (IUCC) based at Tongji University. This agreement should help to build French-Chinese (IMU-IUCC) teams working on a variety of urban planning topics. It should also enable professor and researcher exchanges and the organization of collaborative international scientific events.

Call for projects: The “Structuring Projects” program aims to support the development of actions that contribute to establishing medium- or long-term cooperation in a scientific or cultural field. It also seeks to establish the UdL as a leading university in these fields as well as in its collaboration with China. It supports structuring cooperation projects that are either already underway or in the process of being set up, involving several partners.

The Joint Research Institute for Science and Society (JoRISS): founded in 2010, the Joint Research Institute for Science and Society (JoRISS) is an international research platform that aims to improve collaborations between the East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, the École normale supérieure de Lyon (ENS de Lyon) as a member of the Université de Lyon (UdL) and the French National Center for Scientific Research (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – CNRS) JoRISS acts as an incubator for new projects over a period of one or two years, through an annual call for projects, and as a platform for the long-term development of projects that have been successfully incubated within the JoRISS institute or elsewhere.

Support for international laboratories and research groups

The Université de Lyon supports the following IRPs (International Research Projects) and IRLs (International Research Laboratories):

  • The E2P2L IRL: Eco-efficient Products and Processes Laboratory
  • The Post-Western Sociology IRP: Post-western sociologies and field sciences in China and France
