On July 6, 2023, the Université de Lyon and its partners – the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes academic region, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region and the Métropole de Lyon, symbolically brought to a close Lyon Cité Campus, a major project to modernize the Université de Lyon’s real estate portfolio that began 14 years ago.
A total of 23 buildings have been refurbished (i.e. almost a third of existing real estate) and seven new constructions have been completed, helping to make LyonTech-la Doua a national and international benchmark campus in science and technology for a sustainable society.
Located in Villeurbanne, in the heart of the Lyon metropolitan area, the LyonTech-la Doua campus is a driving force behind the visibility and attractiveness of the Lyon Saint-Étienne university site. The campus is home to the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, INSA Lyon, CPE Lyon and Enssib, as well as CETIAT and the regional offices of CNRS, INRAE and Inria. It accommodates 30,000 people, including 25,000 students, and covers an area of around 100 hectares (247 acres).
The priorities of the campus modernization project
○ Improved energy performance
Improving energy performance was one of the pillars of the rehabilitation of the LyonTech-la Doua campus. The replacement of the facades and the insulation of the roofs makes it possible to achieve a reduction in heating consumption of more than 40%.
○ Ground desimpermeabilization
Through the eco-campus project, the Université de Lyon has been committed, since the start of the works, to dewatering more than 4 hectares on the campus, and separating rainwater from the territory's sanitation systems via reinfiltration. rainwater from roofs and roads. This project is supported by a partnership with the Water Agency (Agence de l'eau). The projects implemented on campus also play a role in raising public awareness of water management issues in the city.
○ Creation of new places for teaching, research and student life
Six construction operations have enabled the creation of new places for teaching and research:
- The Halle Moteurs/Elise Deroche,
- The Tour A/Sophie Germain,
- The Tour D/Jacqueline Ferrand,
- The Chimie Bio/Edgar Lederer building,
- The innovation Axel'One Campus,
- The INL-CPE/Irène Joliot Curie building.
○ Improved functionalities, fire safety and accessibility standards
Upgrading to standards in terms of accessibility for people with reduced mobility, as well as improving the fire safety conditions of the rehabilitated buildings, were a priority of the rehabilitation operation. Many features have been created, such as corridors to secure the distribution of gases or extensions to facilitate the emptying of premises and the storage of dangerous products.
○ Development of the quality of life on campus
The quality of life of students is at the center of the interventions carried out as part of the Lyon Cité Campus operation. Particular emphasis has been placed on the quality of the green outdoor spaces through the creation of a green axis, a veritable green spine that crosses the campus from East to West for nearly 2.5 kilometers. The limitation of the presence of the car in favor of soft mode travel has also been strongly developed, via the requalification of roads and the creation of numerous cycle paths and parking places for bicycles. A program to renovate sports grounds has also been undertaken, as well as a vast operation to rehabilitate student accommodation and create catering areas adapted to new student uses.
