[RETROSPECTIVE] Renovation of the CNSMD de Lyon: a look back at the inauguration of the Black Box

Completion of the CNSMD de Lyon renovation project as part of the French Recovery Plan

Renovation work on the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse (CNSMD) de Lyon, located along the Saône embankment in the 9th district of Lyon, began in 2022 and was completed in December 2023.

Funded as part of the real estate component of the French Recovery Plan (Plan France Relance, see more information in French), the project focused on energy efficiency and the creation of a new performing arts rehearsal space, the Black Box.

This listed historic building, which housed the Lyon Veterinary School until 1977, is now home to the CNSMD de Lyon and has undergone extensive renovation work to achieve major energy savings and provide a more comfortable experience. Focusing on three buildings (Ancien, Ardèche and Isère), the project addresses three priorities of the French Recovery Plan:

1. Improve the energy performance of existing buildings,
2. Ensure that the renovation is consistent with the overall real estate project for the CNSMD,
3. Complete the renovation work in the short term and carry out work on an occupied site.

In order to complete the renovation in accordance with these objectives, the CNSMD de Lyon entrusted the Université de Lyon with the delegated project management mandate in April 2021. Following the design phase, in collaboration with the Architectes des Bâtiments de France, and the awarding of all works contracts, work began in February 2022, with completion scheduled for the end of 2023.
