The MANUTECH-SLEIGHT Graduate School of Research (EUR - École universitaire de recherche) on Light-Surface Engineering, Health and Society is a key project coordinated by the Université de Lyon, and managed by the Université Jean Monnet.

It was selected in October 2017 during the call for projects for the third phase of the Investments for the Future Program (PIA3). Led by Florence Garrelie, Director of the Hubert Curien Laboratory (UJM/CNRS/IOGS), this program will receive €6.3M in funding from the French National Research Agency (ANR) and will be implemented over a 10-year period.

The MANUTECH-SLEIGHT Graduate School of Research (EUR) was officially launched on October 2, 2018. It aims to become a world-class Graduate School in the field of Light-Surface Engineering through the convergence of different fields of study:

• Optics-photonics;
• Materials science;
• Mechanics;
• Imaging;
• Computer science;
• Bio-engineering (orthopedics or ophthalmology).

This program relies on the solid foundation of the MANUTECH-USD EquipEx and the MANUTECH-SISE LabEx, strengthening and coordinating local skills for science and surface technology. The EUR enjoys a highly favorable ecosystem, with two competitiveness clusters, VIAMECA and MINALOGIC, and the FrenchTech #Manutech system. In this context, the Université Jean Monnet, through its Hubert Curien Laboratory and the HEF company, pioneered a university-company partnership with this initiative that positions the Saint-Étienne region as a world leader in the field of surface engineering.

Academic Programs

In coordination with the scientific arm of the project, the EUR MANUTECH-SLEIGHT aims to increase the attractiveness of the high-quality Master’s programs, with one-of-a-kind educational opportunities and its strong emphasis on multidisciplinary studies. This involves creating “majors” and “minors” in each course, strengthening the international attractiveness of these training programs by funding Master’s-level scholarships and offering courses that fully integrate education and research, much like Graduate Schools.

The EUR MANUTECH-SLEIGHT is based on six Master’s programs from the UJM’s Faculty of Science and Technology and one from its Faculty of Medicine, the Université de Lyon’s SIS and MEGA doctoral schools, the Engineering programs from the Institut d’Optique Graduate School (IOGS), and the INSA Lyon.

Research activities

The scientific aim of the EUR MANUTECH SLEIGHT is to become the global leader in the field of Light-Surface Engineering. To attain its ambitious goals, the consortium will work in an integrated way in 3 scientific areas, aiming to better understand and master light-surface engineering, in particular to:

  • Predict, test and define the processes of light-induced surface changes to identify and control the fundamental processes that guide the transitory development of light absorption and surface changes.
  • Extract full information and meaning from surface imaging to provide diagnostic tools for a variety of environments, including harsh environments, in situ diagnosis on biological tissue, and to provide in situ manufacturing process verification methods for industrial applications.
  • Work towards a decisive technological leap in engineering and controlling the light-induced surface change effects, which could be used, for instance, to develop the next generation of smart surface treatment tools at ultimate scales and to develop micro-nano structured surfaces with applications in optics, mechanics, chemistry and physics.

Partnerships

The EUR MANUTECH-SLEIGHT involves strong partnerships in Lyon and Saint-Étienne with 13 public and private partners, including 8 academic institutions, 2 research organizations and 3 private partners:

The Université de Lyon (coordinator), the Université Jean Monnet, INSA Lyon, the CNRS, Inserm, the Institut d’Optique Graduate School, Mines Saint-Étienne, the École Centrale de Lyon, ENISE, the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, the GIE Manutech-USD, HEF, Kéranova.
