[RETROSPECTIVE] The Université de Lyon resumes its academic partnerships in Brazil

On The February 22, 2023

Brazil, and in particular the State of São Paulo, is one of the geographical areas with which the Université de Lyon has been developing close relations. After a brief interruption due to the Covid crisis, the Université de Lyon resumed its activities in 2022, particularly in the fields of training and research.

The University of São Paulo (USP) is the UdL’s main academic partner in Brazil; it has also identified the Université de Lyon as an important strategic partner. As part of this bilateral partnership, a structured collaboration for training and research has been established with the USP. This involves dual-qualification training courses, scientific workshops, start-up funds and calls for joint research projects.

Training: a delocalized law degree

In 2014, as part of the International Triangular Partnerships in Higher Education (PITES), the USP joined forces with the Jean Moulin Lyon 3, Lumière Lyon 2 and Jean Monnet universities - all under the banner of the Université de Lyon - to create a delocalized law degree. The purpose of this degree is to train selected USP students in French law, in addition to Brazilian law.

In 2022, as part of this program and with the support of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, four research professors from the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 went to São Paulo for a teaching assignment in law:

  • Prof. G. Marti | European Union Law
  • Prof. L. Mayaux | French Civil Law
  • Prof. I. Michallet | Environmental Law
  • Prof. L. Pailler | International Contract Law

A total of 90 students attended this 132-hour course. This initial offer was supplemented by other teaching assignments.

Research: links between the Institutes of Advanced Studies

The assignments carried out by the four research professors have enabled them to establish new scientific relationships and to identify new areas of cooperation.

In addition Prof. Jean-Michel Roy, director of the Collegium de Lyon, visited the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte. The aim of this visit was twofold: thematic, through participation in a series of seminars on “Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence”, and prospective, to promote and redesign the scientific project of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Lyon.

The latter is intended to become a research incubator for the Lyon and Saint-Étienne sites, but also a support structure for the development of research and a tool for public action to address scientific issues or societal challenges.

For the academic year 2022/2023, the Collegium de Lyon is host to three Brazilian researchers out of a total of 21 researchers.
