The U7+ Alliance 2024 Presidential Summit was held at Bocconi University in Milan and was attended by over 80 university leaders from 18 countries.

At a time of rapid and increasingly unstable geopolitical change, members of the U7+ Alliance are working together to address the challenges of access to education. The aim: to strengthen networks and further develop global efforts to tackle some of society’s most pressing problems.

Coinciding with the G7 meeting in Puglia, Italy, over 80 university leaders from 18 countries gathered at Bocconi University this week for the U7+ Presidential Summit. They called on G7 leaders to work with them to support increased global access to higher education as a means of strengthening inclusion, educating the next generation of leaders, and contributing to stable, prosperous societies.

To quote the U7+ Alliance press release: “We believe supporting the continued development of a strong higher education sector that provides equitable access to quality education needs to be done in partnership with governments”. “Higher education institutions play a crucial role in promoting prosperity and development in each of our communities and around the world. We have a responsibility to remove barriers to higher education, in partnership with other universities and through cooperation with multilateral organizations such as the G7,” explains Professor Meric Gertler, President of the University of Toronto and Chairman of the U7+ Alliance.

The Presidents of 46 U7+ universities, including Frank Debouck, President of the Université de Lyon, have formally committed to the U7+ 2024 Declaration on Global Access to Higher Education. The document was presented to Anna Maria Bernini, the Italian Minister of Higher Education and Research, on April 11, in her role as representative of the Italian government, which is hosting this year’s G7 summit.
