[RETROSPECTIVE] MT180 2024: David Lopes and François-Joseph Billaud win the UdL's regional final

The regional final of the “My Thesis in 180 Seconds” competition was held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 in the Université de Lyon’s Grand Amphitheater. PhD students David Lopes (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1) and François-Joseph Billaud (Université Lumière Lyon 2) won the first prize and the People’s Choice Award, respectively, and have now reached the national semi-finals.

On Tuesday March 19, twelve PhD students from the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, the Université Lumière Lyon 2, the Université Jean Monnet Saint-Étienne and the ENS de Lyon presented their research projects in three minutes, before a jury and a non-specialist audience who voted for their favorite candidate. A crowd of almost 350 people gathered at the Université de Lyon’s Grand Amphitheater to support their favorite candidate, with several hundred viewers tuning in to watch the competition online.
The finalists
• The first prize was awarded to David Lopes, from the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (L-VIS laboratory), for his thesis entitled “Study of the impact of gender stereotypes on the socialization of men who take part in a “girl’s” sport, such as baton twirling”.
• Second place went to Céline Spriet, from the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (Marc Jeannerod Institute of Cognitive Sciences – Joint Research Unit 5229, CNRS), for her thesis entitled “The development of visual categories in term and preterm infants”.
• And third place went to Iris Dadole, from the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (International Infectious Diseases Research Center), for her thesis entitled “The molecular basis of persister regrowth during infection”.
• The audience at the Université de Lyon’s Grand Amphitheater was also invited to vote for their favorite thesis subject and the best 180-second presentation. The People’s Choice Award went to François-Joseph Billaud, from the Université Lumière Lyon 2 (ELICO laboratory), for his thesis entitled “Social rating systems: issues of power and self-presentation”.
David Lopes and François-Joseph Billaud will travel to Paris to represent the Université de Lyon in the national semi-finals from March 28 to 30, 2024. Congratulations to all four of them!
